UTM LAUNCHES NEEDEDU 4.0 ERASMUS+ PROJECT: ENGINEERING EDUCATION 4.0 FOR MOLDOVA

On 13-14 February 2024, the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) launched an ambitious project that will transform mechanical engineering education in Moldova. The Erasmus+ KA2 project “EnhaNcing MEchanical Engineering EDUcation in Moldova for Industry 4.0” (NeeDEDU4.0), ref. no. 101128623, will accelerate the transition of higher education to Industry 4.0, improving the employability of graduates and contributing to the achievement of the EU acquis on green transition and climate neutrality.

A strong consortium of universities, companies and governmental organisations from Moldova, Germany and Romania will implement the NEEDEDU 4.0 project. The Technical University of Moldova will coordinate the project, in collaboration with prestigious partners from Moldova and Europe:

  • “Alecu Russo” State University of Balti,
  • “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” State University of Cahul,
  • RWTH Aachen University,
  • Transilvania University of Brasov,
  • Dräxlmaier Grup, Germany, one of the most important international companies known worldwide as a supplier of complex systems of wiring, electrical and electronic components.

In this project UTM will also benefit from the support of its associates:

  • ICS DRA Dräxlmaier Automotive SRL, Moldova,
  • Ministry of Education and Research,
  • National Agency for Quality Assurance in Education,
  • Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Moldova,

Each partner will contribute its specific expertise to the successful implementation of the project.

The NEEDEDU 4.0 project aims mainly at strengthening and developing the capacity of human resources and virtual laboratories, aiming at improving educational standards and curricula in the field of mechanical engineering.

Specific objectives include:

  • Development and implementation of a new inter-university master program in mechanical engineering with a special focus on Industry 4.0,
  • Strengthening the teaching capabilities of academics through the Teach-the-Teacher programme,
  • Development of modern virtual laboratories to facilitate interactive and experimental learning,
  • Adapting curricula to European standards and the needs of Industry 4.0.

Project impact:

The NEEDEDU 4.0 project will have a significant impact on students, universities and industry in Moldova:

  • Students will acquire advanced skills and knowledge relevant to Industry 4.0,
  • Universities will strengthen their teaching and research capacities,
  • Industry will benefit from a skilled workforce adapted to modern needs.

With this important initiative, UTM strengthens its position among educational institutions, contributing to the modernization of mechanical engineering education in Moldova and preparing students for a successful career in Industry 4.0.

To this end, the project will run for 3 years (1 January 2024 – 31 December 2026) Prof. univ., dr. hab. Larisa BUGAIAN, head of the Erasmus+ Centre, is the project coordinator, bringing expertise and dedication to the achievement of the proposed objectives.
